The Story Behind Saturday Smack
If you grew up around Alabama football, you know that Saturdays are different.
They’re louder.
They’re more colorful.
And they’re full of tradition.
For me, one of those traditions was always houndstooth.
The Pattern That Started It All
Long before it became a symbol of Alabama football, houndstooth was a classic textile pattern that originated in Scotland. But in Tuscaloosa, it took on a completely different meaning.
That’s because legendary Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Bryant wore a houndstooth fedora on the sidelines throughout his coaching career. Over time, that hat became one of the most recognizable images in college football.
What started as one coach’s personal style became a tradition that fans embraced across generations.
Today, when you see houndstooth in a stadium, you know exactly what it means.
It means Alabama.
A College Idea That Took Off
My name is Chris Starnes, and my journey with houndstooth started while I was a student at the University of Alabama.
Like many college students, I was looking for an opportunity to build something of my own. I noticed how much fans loved the houndstooth tradition—but at the time, there weren’t many creative ways for fans to wear or share it on game day.
So I started a small business selling houndstooth products.
What began as a simple idea quickly grew into something much bigger.
Through what became Game Day Collection, we were able to bring houndstooth products to hundreds of big box and specialty retailers across the country while also selling directly to Alabama fans online.
It was an incredible ride, and it showed me something important:
Alabama fans don’t just follow traditions.
They live them.
The Next Chapter
Fast forward to 2025, and I was given the opportunity to step back into the world of houndstooth again.
That’s where Saturday Smack comes in.
Saturday Smack is about celebrating the traditions we love while adding creativity and fun to the game day experience.
Our products are designed for fans who want to show their Alabama pride in ways that feel fresh, bold, and authentic.
Why Saturday Smack Exists
College football is one of the few places left where traditions still mean something.
Fans travel across the country to be part of it. Families pass it down for generations. The stadium becomes a second home.
Saturday Smack exists to celebrate that spirit.
Our goal is simple:
Make game day more fun.
Through new designs, creative products, and a deep respect for Alabama’s traditions, we’re building something that honors the past while bringing energy to the future.
