Alabama’s Houndstooth History
From Bear Bryant to Game Day Collection—and the Next Chapter with Saturday Smack
If you’ve spent any time around Alabama football, you’ve seen it.
The black-and-white pattern that stands out in a sea of crimson. The hat in the stands. The scarf. The belt. The koozie.
Houndstooth.
For Alabama fans, it’s more than a pattern—it’s a symbol of tradition, pride, and game day creativity.
The Origin of Alabama Houndstooth
The story of houndstooth in Alabama football begins with the legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Bryant coached the Crimson Tide from 1958 to 1982 and led the program to six national championships, becoming one of the most successful coaches in college football history. Paul 'Bear' Bryant
Along the sidelines, Bryant was rarely seen without his signature hat—a black-and-white patterned fedora that would become one of the most recognizable images in college football.
Over time, that hat became inseparable from Alabama football itself. The distinctive houndstooth pattern—originally a textile design from the Scottish Lowlands—became associated with the Crimson Tide thanks to Bryant’s sideline style.
What began as one coach’s wardrobe choice eventually evolved into a symbol worn proudly by generations of Alabama fans.
Today, houndstooth is everywhere on game day.
Scarves. Hats. Dresses. Jackets. Belts. Even stadium accessories.
And it all traces back to the Bear.
The Pattern That Became a Tradition
One of the unique things about houndstooth is that the pattern itself isn’t owned by the university. Because it’s a traditional textile design, it has long been used freely in fashion and merchandise connected to Alabama fandom.
That freedom allowed the pattern to spread organically.
Fans began incorporating it into game day outfits. Designers created new takes on the classic pattern. Businesses found creative ways to bring it to the Alabama community.
Over the years, houndstooth became an unofficial badge of loyalty—a subtle but unmistakable nod to Alabama football.
And for some of us, it also became an opportunity.
My Story: Building a Houndstooth Business in College
My name is Chris Starnes, and like a lot of Alabama fans, I grew up around the tradition of houndstooth.
While attending the University of Alabama, I started a small business selling houndstooth products.
What began as a simple idea quickly turned into something much bigger.
Through what would eventually become Game Day Collection, we were able to introduce houndstooth products to hundreds of big box and specialty retailers across the country while also selling directly to fans online.
It was an incredible experience—one that showed me just how powerful this tradition really is.
Alabama fans didn’t just want apparel.
They wanted creativity. Personality. Something fun to wear and share on game day.

Why Houndstooth Still Matters
Decades after Bear Bryant walked the sidelines, houndstooth is still instantly recognizable across college football.
It connects generations of Alabama fans—from those who remember Bryant coaching in person to students attending their very first game in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
It’s history.
It’s style.
And most importantly, it’s community.
That’s why we’re excited to help write the next chapter.
